Generally speaking, Web services are distributed services designed to support data access and exchange over the Internet regardless of the user's platform and applications. Such interoperability between systems is based upon the use of common standards and protocols for listing, describing and accessing data services. For example, Web services allow users to combine information originating from various sources in order to carry out analyses or to visualize particular data sets.
Web Data Services are easy to use connectors that define a series of access methods (or functions) and their behaviour. WDS are Web services built upon the SOAP technology that allow systems to explore data and that can meet most conventional data access needs.
